Wednesday, February 3rd is the Feast of St. Blaise with the traditional blessing of throats which will take place after the 6:30 AM and 8:15 AM Masses.
Given the current pandemic, I think it is prudent to not bless individual throats this year because (1) it would prolong the length of the Mass when we are instructed to celebrate the Mass expeditiously to avoid prolonged exposure by members of the assembly to one another, and (2) there could be incidental contact by the crossed candles touching the necks of those being blessed.
The blessing will take place after the General Intercessions (Prayers of the Faithful) using an alternate form which is described in the Book of Blessings in the following manner: “If, for pastoral reasons, each individual cannot be blessed in the usual manner, a priest or deacon may give the blessing to all by extending his hands, without crossed candles, over the people while saying the prayer of blessing…”
